Loss of sleep for estate agents
September 15, 2008
The state of the mortgage and housing market has been in steady decline in the UK for a number of months. The number of mortgages and the availability of mortgages has dropped dramatically over the months, with fewer and fewer people able to get hold of a mortgage and purchase a property. In addition to this, and partly due to this, the number of property sales has also fallen, and is expected to keep on falling. Other factors that have affected the number of house sales include the threat of house prices continuing to fall, which is putting many potential buyers off due to the increased risk of falling into negative equity.
Many estate agents have been reporting very poor property sale figures, and based on the sharp slowdown in housing transactions many industry officials have predicted that thousands of estate agents could suffer job losses and closure over the course of this year. It is little wonder, therefore, that according to the results of a recent survey estate agents are currently the most sleep deprived professionals, with most getting only a few hours sleep a night as a result of worrying about the current housing situation.
The survey, which was carried out by Travelodge, showed that most estate agents get less then six hours sleep per night. There were also other industry officials that were not far behind. Taxi drivers and lorry drivers were found to be getting just over six hours sleep on average per night, and this may be due to the current pressures that many are facing as a result of rocketing petrol prices, which are affecting the transport industry.
Health officials say that people should get around eight hours sleep per night for maximum effect. One official involved in the research said: “It’s no surprise the professions in the industries worst hit by the credit crunch come top of the charts. We all know that money worries and job security are key drivers of stress which in turn, leads to significant sleep loss.”
